Synopsis
마르크 피어셀 감독의 <낙원>은 전작 <고기의 종말>과 문제의식을 공유하는 작품이다. 아버지의 농장을 물려받은 얀 게르데스는 기존의 낙농업 방식을 버리고 카렌과 함께 소들을 위한 새로운 농장을 만든다. 그곳은 방목과 햇볕이 허락되고 ‘가축’이 아닌 ‘동물’을 위한 장소이다. 이곳에서의 2년 동안 감독은 목장 주인을 비롯해 이웃과 예술가, 활동가 등을 찾아가 ‘낙원’에서 깨달은 인간과 동물, 삶과 공존에 대한 가치에 대해 질문한다. 한편, 유토피아적인 목장의 풍경과는 대조적으로 다른 어느 곳에서는 게놈 진보를 통해 만들어진 슈퍼 소 경연대회가 열린다. 종을 ‘동물’과 ‘가축’으로 분류하고 이에 따라 확산되어 온 제도와 산업의 현주소를 낙원과 함께 담아냄으로써 감독은 혼재하는 동시대의 단면을 기록한다.
Marc Pierschel's shares the same philosophy with his last work . When Jan Gerdes inherited his father's farm, he ditched the old dairy farming ways and converted the farm to a cow sanctuary together with Karin. In this place, 'animals' are not 'livestock' any more and they are allowed to graze on grass and feel the sunshine. Enlightened by this 'paradise', the director visits the farm owner, the neighbors, artists, and activists over 2 years to talk about the values of life and coexistence of humans and animals. In the meantime, something so alien from this utopian farm is happening in some other place. A Super Cow Competition is held with genome-edited cows. Ever since separating 'livestock' from 'animals', the system and industry have developed accordingly. The director reveals the present state of the industry alongside the paradise, showing two very different aspects of the same age.
